Skydiving is a recreational and competitive sport involving a preplanned drop from an airplane, helicopter, hot air balloon, or other type of aircraft. Drop Zone, or DZ, is the term used to describe an airport where skydiving takes place. A skydiver jumps from an aircraft and freefalls for a length of time before deploying a parachute, or canopy, to slow down for landing.
Despite the perception of danger, skydiving is safer than ever. Skydivers are required to carry a reserve canopy in case the main fails. Skydiving has several disciplines, including formation skydiving (Relative Work or RW), freeflying, canopy relative work (CRW), BASE jumping (Buildings Antennas, Spans, Earth), and big ways (formation skydiving with a large number of people). A tandem skydive is when a passenger is connected to an experience skydiver by a harness. The tandem master controls the whole jump. The passenger, however, does receive a small amount of training beforehand.
